Basic characteristics:

This is the only native rat found in New England, unless the Roof Rat is brought in by chance from outside the area. They are also called Sewer Rats, River Rats, Barn Rats and City Rats. The largest of the common rats, Norway rats usually measure 7" to 9.5" in length, including the tail. They are predominantly brown in color, with splashes of black, gray, and yellowish-white in their coarse, shaggy coats. Norway rats in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New York are nocturnal, and they dwell in underground burrows. Severe infestations can be found above ground in drop ceilings, garages, out- buildings, crawl spaces and attics.
Time of year they are active:
Norway rats are native to and very common in New England, and are active and visible all year long.
The damage they can do:
Norway rats frequently gnaw through insulation, siding, food containers, wires-anything that gets between them and their food source. Many house fires of official "unknown origin" have been blamed on rats gnawing through electrical wiring in the attic.
You'll know you have Norway rats:
Besides the actual sighting of these dreaded creatures, the most common signs of their presence are: gnawed food containers (which results in food contamination); burrows around the outside of the building, about the size of a tennis ball; oval-shaped fecal droppings about the size of a pencil eraser; and noises in the walls or attic late at night.
Are they dangerous?
Besides the damage they can cause to your property, ALL rodents can carry disease. In fact, they have been the cause of some of the worst outbreaks of infectious diseases in human history!
Why are they in my home?
Norway rats in CT, MA, RI, and NY will settle in and raise their young wherever they find a safe harbor and a consistent source of food and water. They love to be secluded-the more tucked away from the outer world, the better. If there is an outside garbage bin or an open dumpster on your property, rats may take the opportunity to feed there. Other food sources include bird seed from feeders or pet food placed outside. Good sanitation is an important preventive measure.
Our treatment-and our promise to you:
Our Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New York rodent extermination company goal is to eliminate your rodent problem during our first visit. If you see more rodent activity after the treatment, we will re-treat, free of charge, throughout the warranty period.
A rodent exterminator from our company starts with a complete inspection of your property to find the source of your problem. In most cases, we treat the infestation with a single-feed, second-generation anticoagulant product. In sensitive areas, or areas where children or pets might come into contact with the product, we place it in a tamper-resistant station designed to limit access. We also might use mechanical devices such as traps, glue boards, and liquid baits.
What happens after treatment?
After the first treatment, there is usually an immediate reduction in rodent activity. Total elimination might take as long as 2 weeks.
